Do you think society is controlled by technology?

I am just curious. Almost everywhere I turn I see people using their smart phones in public as if there is some sort of requirement that you must use it. Sometimes I think if the internet were shut down (globally) for one day many would have withdrawal symptoms because they are simply addicted to the internet. I don't own an smart phone. In fact my cell phone is a much older model that what is out currently. But even with that, I don't feel the need to jump on every technological advance. I also feel I can survive without the internet for extended periods of time. But my question is, are we as a society (I guess in general not just Western society) controlled by technology? Are we that dense that we do not see the affects of internet use in our daily lives?
