Has the economy steadily been going downhill since the mid 1960s when compared to now?

Absolutely. Nothing shows what a worthless statistic GDP is more than the complete collapse of living standards while that phony statistic was going up. If you take government spending out of it (it never should have been included in the first place) you will see a very steady decline in the economy.
